Abstract

The information flow circulating within ecosystems underpins a network of semiotic connectivity that contributes to biodiversity dynamics at the landscape and local scales. Public environmental policies are beginning to take this informational dimension into account. It remains, however, difficult to characterize. Acoustics is likely the most measurable vector of information and has the advantage of being easy for stakeholders to understand. This likely explains the rise of the concept of soundscapes and the scientific discipline that studies them, ecoacoustics. While indicators of soundscapes dynamics are now operational, their relationship to the processes that enable acoustic connectivity in landscapes has yet to be established. Acoucène offers an initial approach toward this goal, combining empirical research with the development of a theoretical framework, using common passerines in metropolitan France as a case study. This seminar details the project’s approach, the theoretical and methodological challenges, and prospects for operationalizing the concept of acoustic connectivity in the context of spatial planning strategies based on ecological corridors.
